If you are Pescatarian

This blog is probably of little to no use for Pescatarians.

I don't eat seafood. I'm allergic.

I used to eat catfish. It's a riverine species. And I used to eat shrimp once in a while.

And then my health got worse and I ended up in the emergency room because I ate one shrimp off my husband's plate at a restaurant and spent a week in bed feeling like I had been beaten with a baseball bat. Merry Christmas to me. (Yet another reason for me to hate Xmas.)

For a few years after that, I could get hives, a symptom of allergy, if I was in the room with someone cooking shrimp. I'm less allergic these days but I think I have had fish only a few times in many years and no longer eat shrimp at all.

I tried to try crab ONCE. I don't think I was able to swallow it. I felt like vomiting when I put it in my mouth -- and this was BEFORE the aforementioned crisis. A nurse friend suggested it's the iodine in shellfish that I don't tolerate and it was likely made worse when I had contrasting dye CAT scans that year in which I was injected with a contrast dye, which was probably iodine.

Because of that crisis, I realized I've always not tolerated seafood well. My dad didn't like seafood and was the man of the house, so mom simply didn't cook it.

When I was a child, we ate catfish once a week in the summer so my mom didn't have to cook. There was a place maybe a mile from home called -- I think -- Prittchet's Fish Kitchenette and we would get takeout with catfish, hush puppies, French fries and coleslaw.

I was a teenager or young adult before I realized this was an actual restaurant. Little kiosks with a takeout window and no seating were more common when I was a child and I believed this was something like that.

I was a teenager or young adult when my sister successfully introduced me to shrimp. I was always a picky eater and she was always plotting to get me to try new things and the only person who was any good at getting me to actually try new foods.

I never was expected to eat seafood while growing up, so I didn't know it was a problem until I became extremely ill. But I have no qualifications for advising Pescatarians and am unlikely to ever acquire such.
