Hasenpfeffer, Rabbit Starvation AKA Protein Poisoning
Below are the top two ingredients for Hasenpfeffer in a recipe on allrecipes.com.
½ pound bacon, diced
3 pounds rabbit meat, cleaned and cut into pieces
I tripped across a YouTube video by a homesteader talking about rabbit being the best or cheapest way to provide adequate protein. He apparently hadn't heard of rabbit starvation aka protein poisoning.
Rabbit is too lean to live on. You need to add fats and carbs to safely eat it. The Hasenpfeffer recipe above starts with pork.
My recollection is rabbit is haram, not halal. In other words "not kosher" or not clean or not recommended. My reading suggests Islamic dietary stuff is more like nutritional guidelines than Christian pronouncements of hellfire and damnation.
Islam and Judaism both recommend against pork or forbid it. The psychic Edgar Cayce said pork should be avoided except for occasionally having crispy bacon.
My mother was German. German cooking includes a lot of pork. She once made a comment to me that implied to me that the reason she gradually stopped making schnitzel and generally reduced pork in our diets is because I don't like pork.
I have a genetic disorder and I misprocess fats. Bacon is a fat I tolerate well. I eat bacon, sometimes very regularly, and sometimes pepperoni but otherwise I typically avoid pork.
But if you are going to eat rabbit, you may wish to make something like Hasenpfeffer because otherwise it's too lean.
I've written a couple of pieces elsewhere (linked below) about the fact that pork is high in selenium and I suspect this is why Black Americans have high blood pressure. Regular pork consumption likely promotes selenium poisoning, so I don't think you should make pork a staple of your diet.
But if you are homesteading, a mix of rabbit and pork may not be unreasonable as part of your diet, especially if you trend semi-vegetarian. Contrary to what many Americans seem to think, it's not excessively challenging to get adequate protein, even if you are vegetarian, though I do worry about things like fats and B vitamins.
